ABSTRACT
This study analyses the challenges of facility management in the University of Benin with a view to adopting innovative measures to curb these challenges. Questionnaires were administered to both construction professionals and management staff of University of Benin, Edo State, Nigeria. Data were collected on the current state of facilities, challenges of facility management and measures in addressing these challenges. The Mean Item Score (MIS) was employed in analyzing the data collected. Findings revealed that “Senate Chambers” with Mean score “4.37” was found to be the highest ranked facility in terms of having the best facility in its current state and the “Hostels” with mean item score of “1.96” was found to be the lowest ranked facility in terms of having the best facility in its current state. “Unclear role and targets for effective team working” was the highest ranked facility management challenge faced by the University with Mean Item score of 4.27. “Proactive Measures” was the highest ranked innovative measure for curbing the challenges of facility management with Mean Item score of 4.45. Therefore the need for student hostels to be improved upon is very important as it will provide a convenient environment for dwelling and reduce exposure to bacterial infections thereby giving the students good health.
