ABSTRACT

An investigation  on the use of natural substitutes for steel as reinforcement in concrete. In this investigation bamboo was being used to replace steel in beams of sizes 500x100x100. Its flexural strength were tested for after a duration of seven (7) and fourteen (14) days. The beams being constructed were done for mix ratios 1:2:4 and 1:1.5:3 using Okhuahia (OKH) sand as fine aggregate and gravel of 10mm sizes as coarse aggregate.

A total of 32 beams samples were being tested for of which twelve (12) had bamboo cut into sizes 30mm x 400mm as its reinforcement and twelve (12) has steel of 8mm diameter and 400mm in length as reinforcement. The remain twelve (12) beam samples were plain concrete. These samples were used for analytical purposes.

Flexural test were carried out on all beams samples casted after a duration of seven (7) and fourteen (14) days. Comparison were made for the bamboo reinforced, steel reinforced and plain concrete beams constructed  in order to ascertain their flexural strength when used as a structural member.
