ABSTRACT
Abuse of political power by politicians posed and still poses to democratic survival in Nigeria. Arguably, the greatest challenge to democracy in Nigeria is the political abuse of power and the failure of the political class to follow due process and the rule of law in democratic activities. One also finds some levels of penchant and attachment to political power among Nigeria’s politicians. This has propelled all kinds of tinkering with the constitution. This abuse of political power among political office holders in Nigeria seems to be in line with the Hobbessian postulation of the Leviathan. That is, the attitude that an individual who has political power is himself not subject to the law. Thomas Hobbes theory of the Leviathan is an idea or a political thought that was best suitable for a monarchical system of government. Though I whole heartedly subscribe the Leviathan as a medium to solving the problem political instability in the society. For instance, the Leviathan can help to solve to a large extent the myriad of problems in the society, but the question is this: can it work in a democratic system? Coming from the angle of Nigeria and other countries that practice democracy, it cannot be applicable. It is not applicable because the Leviathan is an absolute monarch, “the all in all”, and cannot be applied in a democratic system which is “government of the people, by the people and for the people.” This project adopts the philosophical analysis method.
