ABSTRACT

The investigation of personality traits in second language acquisition has gained significant attention in recent years, as researchers seek to understand the complex relationship between individual characteristics and language learning outcomes. This study aims to explore the impact of various personality traits, including extraversion, openness, and motivation, on the acquisition and mastery of a second language. The study employed a descriptive survey research design to find out the influence of personality traits of second language learners on their acquisition of the second language. Participants were undergraduate students enrolled in the University of Benin during the academic year 2022-2023. This study employed the use of descriptive statistics and correlation analysis which includes the use of tables and graphs to properly analyse the different variables collected in the questionnaires. Findings suggest that agreeableness and openness to experience have a positive correlation with language proficiency. Additionally, high levels of intrinsic motivation and a growth mind-set were identified as contributing factors to successful language acquisition. These findings highlight the importance of considering individual differences and personality traits in the design of language programs and instructional strategies. By understanding the influence of personality on language learning outcomes, educators and policymakers can tailor instructional approaches to meet the diverse needs and preferences of language learners. Implications for future research include examining the role of other personality traits, such as conscientiousness and neuroticism, in language acquisition, as well as exploring the influence of cultural factors on the relationship between personality and language learning.
