ABSTRACT
The study investigated the factors influencing the teaching of Computer Science in junior secondary schools in Edo State and four research questions were raised to guide the study.
The research design used for this study is based on survey research. The population comprises of 4(four) public and 10(ten) private junior secondary schools in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State, with total number of two thousand, four hundred and twenty teachers(2420) while the sample for the study comprised one hundred and fifty (150) teachers . A structured questionnaire titled:an investigation into the factors influencing the teaching of computer science in junior secondary schools in Edo State was used for data collection. The questionnaire was validated by the researcher's supervisor as well as two other experts in the Department of Curriculum and Instructional. The Data were analyzed with mean, standard deviation, and t-test analysis.
The findings of the investigation shows that environmental factors, teacher related factors, learner related factors, administrative factors influences the teaching of computer science. It was concluded environmental factors, teacher related factors, learner related factors and administrative factors influences the teaching of computer science. Based on these findings, the following recommendations are made; Teaching should be carried out in a conducive environment and the appropriate teaching tools such as a laptops, access to internet and power supply made available, Teachers should be encouraged to constantly upgrade their skills in the field of computer science, Parents/Guardians should encourage their children to carry out assignments given to them by computer science teachers. Hence taking their book work seriously, School administrators and government should provide funding for the teaching of computer science. Schools should prioritize the teaching of computer science just like Maths and English as it is a very dynamic discipline that is constantly evolving.
