ABSTRACT

This study investigated the factors affecting public third-grade junior secondary school students' fluency in spoken English in the Local Government Area of Ovia North East, Benin City, Edo State. This research ìdentified the factors affecting students' fluency in spoken English in public junior secondary schools, solutions, and recommendations were also given. The study surveyed 125 junior secondary school students in the Local Government Area of Ovia North East, Benin City, Edo State. Four (4) questions for research were raised to guide the investigation. The research survey designed was adopted for the conduct of the study using a questionnaire as the tool used to collect information to answer the research questions. The tool was validated and subjected to Cronbach's Alpha reliability co-efficient, and the reliability index of 0.717 was obtained, and frequency count, to analyse the data, the mean and standard deviation were applied. viii The results from the research revealed that there are several factors affecting students' fluency in spoken English. It was recommended that English language teachers should increase language exposure and practice both in and out of the classroom. Encourage students in engaging with English Speaking media and provide access to English language learning resources.
