ABSTRACT
The continuous tussle between the pastoralists and farmers in Nigeria has affected many parts of the country in multiple proportions. The need for the protection of citizens and their communities is the primary responsibility of the state. The activities of herdsmen are a threat to the economic, political, and national security of the nation and a major factor associated with underdevelopment, and if their activities are not checked quickly, it may result in an economic disaster for the nation. Among other things, this study aims to investigate the extent, causes, and remedies to the pastoralists-farmers crisis; the effect and implication of these actions on the nation’s economy and the society at large. The study finds amongst other things; that these conflicts have jeopardized the prospects of meeting the sustainable development goals of poverty eradication and zero hunger due to displacement and disruption of people’s means of livelihood patterns. The study recommends the cooperation of all the stakeholders involved as it will require that policy measures and actions be focused on the factors that trigger farmers and herders’ incessant conflicts in Nigeria.
