ABSTRACT

This study delves into the exploration of the relationship between language and culture in teaching English as a second language in senior secondary schools in Ovia north east Local Government Area, Benin City Edo state. Five pivotal research questions guided this investigation, aiming to illuminate the effectiveness of culture in the study of language of students in this region. Data collected was executed through the dissemination of questionnaires, randomly distributed amongst five distinct schools within the local government area. The analysis of the data was facilitated through fundamental statistical techniques, including simple frequency, percentage calculations, and means. These analyses were based on a four-point Likert scale. The population encompassed 1300 ss2 students, with a meticulously selected sample of 250 students drawn randomly from five diverse schools ten public senior secondary schools located in Ovia north east Local Government, Benin city, Edo State. This study not only offers insights into the potential of culture as a vehicle for language study but also shed light on specific perceptions and experiences of senior secondary school students in this region. The findings are anticipated to contribute significantly to the pedagogical strategies employed English language education and curriculum development.
