ABSTRACT
The United Nations is the largest, most powerful intergovernmental organization in the world. The United Nations an intergovernmental organization tasked to promote international cooperation and to create and maintain international order. This research examines the role of the United Nations in achieving global peace and security in the 21st century. It also examines the challenges confronting the United Nations’ efforts in ensuring international peace and security. The United Nations forces have constituted an executive action on behalf of the United Nations for the purpose of maintaining international peace and security, and succeeded in preventing fighting between parties. However, it has not succeeded in finding solutions in reaching lasting peace to these crises. The United Nations has failed to prevent wars and violence or aggression. This is as a result of the challenges faced by the organization. The United Nations has been adversely affected by division amongst its members, poor cooperation, and the absence of special agreements under its Charter. The research therefore recommends that to override the problems facing the international community, it is necessary to have a comprehensive and genuine prospect for international peace and security. The focus should not be limited to building peace but rather making peace sustainable. There needs to be more burden-sharing by member states, including both traditional donors and emerging powers in order to prevent conflict arising in the first place.
