ABSTRACT
The Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) represents the pinnacle of football in Nigeria, yet the labor rights of its players have often been overshadowed by the glamour of the sport. This research delves into the intricacies of the labour rights of professional footballers within the NPFL by examining the legal framework, enforcement mechanism and practical realities faced by these athletes. Firstly,this research examine the contractual agreements between players and clubs, analyzing the extent to which they adhere to international labour standards as prescribed by bodies such as Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) and the International Labour Organization (ILO). Key areas of focus include employment contracts, wage structures, job security and the provisions for health and safety. The research also investigates the role of the NPFL in regulating and enforcing these labour rights. It scrutinizes the effectiveness of existing policies and the avenues available for players to seek redress in cases of rights violations. Additionally, the research highlights the socio-economic impact of inadequate labour rights protection on players’ lives and careers. Findings reveal current and former NPFL players provide qualitative insights into their experiences, shedding light on issues such as delayed salaries, lack of medical care, and the challenges of transitioning to life after football. Finally, the research proffers recommendations for policy reforms and advocacy strategies to enhance the protection of labour rights for NPFL players. By highlighting the best practices from other football leagues globally, it suggests practical steps that stakeholders can adopt to ensure that the rights of footballers in Nigeria are respected and upheld. This research concludes for the necessity for a robust and enforceable framework that guarantees the labour rights of professional footballers, ultimately contributing to the overall development and professionalism of the Nigerian Professional Football League.
