ABSTRACT

For decades, oil exploration activities have been carried out with obvious negative impacts. One such negative impact is the grave effect of flaring of associated gas. Gas flaring occurs when oil is being drilled out of the ground. The gas that accompanies this oil is known as associated gas. The oil companies then vent this gas off, or flare the gas to avoid damage to their equipment. The gas being flared in turn creates a myriad of environmental problems ranging from; acid rain, corroded roofing sheets, increase and instability in soil PH levels, fatal and enduring damage to both flora and fauna around the vicinity where the flaring occurs, and cancer. This activity and its resultant effects demands a high level of attention. However, the government has failed in taking the appropriate steps to arrest this environmental menace from gas flaring.
