ABSTRACT
This research examines environmental degradation in Nigeria .The problem of environmental degradation in Nigeria especially the Niger Delta Region is horrific. The case of environmental degradation arising from the activities of the oil industry in the region is evaluated. Specific negative impact on the region arising from, the activities of the oil industry includes environmental pollution, underdevelopment of host communities and global warming. This research examines the causes and effect of environmental degradation. This research also examines the legal instrument for combating environmental degradation and oil spillage in Nigeria and the problems of its enforcement. This research recommends that oil spillage and gas flaring are deleterious to the environment. This research concludes that addressing the peril requires not just making laws on the part of the government; rather government should ensure that environmental laws are made enforceable, implementable and workable, and recommends that the Nigerian government should carry out a surprise and independent inspection of oil operations and generally activities of humans concerning the environment and place strict sanctions on non-compliance with the law.
