AN EVALUATIVE STUDY OF TEACHING AND LEARNING OF ENGLISH GRAMMATICAL STRUCTURES IN SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOLS OF OVIA NORTH EAST LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF EDO STATE

ABSTRACT

This study evaluates the teaching and learning of English grammar in senior secondary schools of Ovia North East Local Government Area, Edo State. It examines the nature, objectives, methods, and challenges faced in these schools. Chapter one defines the research problem, outlines objectives, hypothesis, scope, and limitations. Chapter two reviews relevant literature on teaching grammar in senior secondary schools. One key challenge identified is that students, while confident in applying grammar mechanics, struggle with a deeper understanding of the underlying concepts. This is evident as less than half (45%) of the students strongly agree or agree that they find it easy to comprehend and retain these concepts. Chapter three details the research methodology (data collection methods), data analysis and discussion, and concludes with recommendations for improvement. These recommendations include providing students with ample class exercises and assignments with proper evaluation and timely feedback, alongside strategies to improve conceptual understanding of grammar. Additionally, the government should organize workshops and seminars to update and expand the knowledge of English language teachers on effective grammar instruction. The study concludes by summarizing the key issues raised and proposing solutions for improvement.
