ABSTRACT
In Nigeria, there were organized political systems operating before colonization without any written constitution. This research work will enable us to either accept or disprove the erroneous write ups of some authors who claimed that the various kingdoms had no system of government. The works of archeologist carried out in some areas located within the confine of these major ethnic groups also gave impetus to the claim of historian on politics and political arrangement of these people. Pre-colonial Nigeria had a wide diversity of politics and government. These are group into three broad systems, which are: large centralized kingdoms and empires; centralized mid-sized kingdoms; and widely scattered chiefdoms. Pre-colonial political systems explains that political and social identities were generally more related to affiliations, such as sharing a common language, than to being an inhabitant of a particular territory.
