ABSTRACT

The decolonization struggle and supposed emancipation of Africa from their European overlords in the last century had resulted in the development of growth of nationalists movements amongst the African blacks. A contemporaneous event arising from the struggle for liberation was an ongoing intellectual struggle for an all-embracing, inclusive political ideology for the African community. A post-independence African intellectual architecture for a neocolonial political and social emancipation was the brainchild of a neo-welfare State as propounded and developed by the Nigerian political scholar, Nnamdi Azikiwe. The conceptual framework of neo-welfarism is supposed to offer the African community an alternative working ideology for both sociopolitical and economic liberation. The motivation for this research paper is to critically examine and evaluate the possible political relevance of neo-welfarism to the Nigerian political climate. It is also in the interest of this paper to provide a clinical investigation to the supposed failure, merits and demerits of the neo welfare system.
