Abstract

Ijesha is a dialect of Yoruba language spoken in five local government areas in Osun State and one in Ekiti State. Like most dialects of Yoruba, it has become overridden by the standard form. The dialect has been neglected by the younger generation as it is regarded as an old form and has no recorded orthography. This research work therefore, is an attempt at bringing attention to this endangered language, providing a sample of its written form and an account of some of its rites and culture. This research therefore, investigates the ethnography of communication as used in Ijesha traditional weddings in time past. The data for study was collected through semi-structured interviews. The study utilized Hymes Speaking Model to analyze the speech events in each stage of the wedding process, where each dialogue and communication as well as the meaning and how to relate this dialogue in social context was drawn out. It was discovered that the Hymes speaking model was sufficient to account to the patterns consistent in Ijesha language use in respect to its context and draw out the meaning these speech events conveyed.
