ABSTRACT
Basically language is the official medium of communication for humans; the need to convey ideas in different scenario has result in humans bringing out different forms of this communication means. Proverbs is a means of communication in most society especially the African society, proverbs are used to communicate very vital messages in the society. This study thus is titled the sociolinguistics analysis of proverbs and riddle in Igbo language, following the principles of Dell Hymes speaking model the study carry out its analysis using ethnography of communication. Data for this study was collected using oral interview and a qualitative research mechanism. The speech act model was used in a successful data analysis; the contextual usage of each proverb will be deduced using the speaking principle were put into use. A successful analysis shows that the ethnography of communication is vital for the analysis of proverbial expression. The analysis also shows that proverbs have hidden meaning and constitute a very crucial part in the linguistic society of the Igbos.
