ABSTRACT
The study focuses on the error analysis of spoken English in Nigeria, a case study Urhobo people living in Warri Delta State. the aim was to find out the nature, types and causes of these errors the study identified the errors Urhobo speakers made as inter language errors. The study relied on Gass and Selinker’s (1994) model for carryingout error analysis. The erros were classified into various categories: (i) errors of substitution (ii) errors of omission (iii) errors of consonant deletion (iv) errors of insertion (v) errors of stress placement (vi) errors of vowel strengthening and also using the simple percentage. The data were collected form Warri Delta State. A 400 word list was used in the process of data collection. Oral interview was also administered to Urhobo English intralingual to find out the errors Urhobo English intralingual to find out the errors Urhobo Enlgish bilingual encounter whne pronouncing such words. The findings revealed among other things that these errors were mostly due to the incomplete mastery of the English language: that some of these errors were caused by interference from the first language.
