ABSTRACT
This study utilised Teun Van Dijk's socio-cognitive approach to examine online news reports, focusing on the themes of stigma, stereotypes, and normalization of negative emotions. The work adopted a qualitative textual analysis of computer mediated data from selected Nigerian news reports and applied Teun Van Dijk's critical discourse approach to uncover how language and discourse shape public opinion and perpetuate social inequalities. The analysis revealed how online news reports often perpetuate stigma and stereotypes, contributing to the marginalization of already vulnerable groups. Furthermore, the work identified how negative emotions are normalized, reinforcing harmful societal norms. This study's findings have implications for promoting inclusive and responsible media practices, highlighting the need for critical media literacy and nuanced reporting to combat harmful discourse and foster a more empathetic society.
