ABSTRACT
This study investigates “The challenges faced by History Education Students in Tertiary institutions. A Case Study of University of Benin”. Data collected were analysed using “test-re-test” method for the study. The population of the study consists of three hundred and four hundred level students in University of Benin with a sample of hundred students which includes: fifty students from three hundred level and fifty students from four hundred level. The research instrument used for the study was questionnaire. The questionnaire was divided into two sections (A&B). “Section A” was designed to generate the personal information of the respondents, While the “Section B” comprised of the items on the topic under research. It was constructed with the care to reflect the problem of the study such that the items would be relevant to the purpose of the study. The instrument was reviewed and certified by the project supervisor and two (2) other experts in Faculty of Education, all in University of Benin. Findings revealed that cognitive exhaustion constitutes a major challenge to Education History students in University of Benin in the sense that it makes student lose memory and ultimately leads to the inability to balance up school activities among other things. And there is obvious difference in departments where there is no cognitive exhaustion. Based on these findings, the following were recommended; That school authority should work on the school timetable so that classes would not be congested. Also, the school and policy makers should do everything possible to make the calendar stable and uninterrupted. Also, teaching practice should be well organised and structured to boost the teaching skills of Education History students. Government should provide a wellequipped research center. Lastly, adequate security should be provided to encourage positive attitude towards learning and to reduce fear and lack of interest among Education History Students in University of Benin.
