ABSTRACT
This research titled “appraisal of the role of government on poverty alleviation using national poverty eradication programme (NAPEP) as a case study in Egor LGA of Edo state ” is aimed at appraising the role of government on poverty alleviation in Nigeria. Four research objectives were raised and one hypothesis formulated. The sample size was 100 respondents selected through a convenience sampling technique. The research made use of primary source of gathering information. The research findings revealed that youth empowerment scheme and community enlightenment scheme are the major methods NAPEP adopts in reducing poverty in Egor local government area of Edo State; NAPEP’s activities have impacted on poverty reduction in Egor local government area of Edo State; and also diversification of the economy and job creation through partnership with private and international organization are other approaches to alleviation of poverty in Nigeria. From the findings of the research work, the following suggestions are made. This include that the activities of NAPEP should be strengthened by the government as its impact was felt in the area where the research work was carried out; and There is need to get the poor people involved in the “fashioning out of poverty alleviation strategies”. Based on the finding of this research, government using NAPEP as a case study have impacted in poverty alleviation in Egor local government Area of Edo state.
