ABSTRACT

 

The media has been seen as a very powerful tool over the years particularly television . Television today is seen as the most potent means of the mass media as a result of its audio-visual nature. Most important messages like news are shown on the television. This study tried to find out an assessment of the role of media in combating Lassa Fever using NTA Benin as a study . The study was anchored by the Agenda Setting Theory and the social responsibility theory. The Survey research method was adopted with the questionnaire as the instruments for data collection. Findings from the study showed that most of the residents of Oredo local government area in Benin are expose to NTA health programmes. The study through the response gotten from the respondents, it is believed that the media to a large extent particularly NTA has help in combating Lassa Fever, although recommendations were made . The study recommends that government agencies and the media personnel most especially NTA should not wait till there is an outbreak of Lassa Fever or any epidemic strikes before designing emergency health programmes, they should have a calendar and alternative plans for national health emergency which should be broadcast at regular interval during NTA programmes and also people of Edo state particularly the Oredo community should be re- orientated on the need to constantly watch television programmes, especially NTA programmes either on TV or their online platform.
