ABSTRACT
Background: Schizophrenia is a severe and long lasting mental health condition that impacts around 1% of the global population, affecting over 24 million people worldwide. The aim of this study is to access the prevalence and management of schizophrenia in Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Uselu, Benin City.
Method: This retrospective study was conducted at the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Uselu, Benin City. Information was obtained from the case notes (between January 2019- December 2021) at the records department using a data collection sheet. Data were analysed using SPSS version 21.0 and expressed in frequencies and percentages. Inferential statistics were done using graph pad instat, and a P-Value ≤0.05 was interpreted to be statistically significant.
Results: Schizophrenia cases accounted for 33.3% of patients who visited the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Uselu, Benin City, within the period under review. Prevalence was higher in males (52.2%) and patients between 20-29 years (33.2%). Hypertension was the most comorbid disease (43.1%), followed by substance abuse (27.8%) and diabetes (12.5%). Paranoid Schizophrenia (199, 53.8%) is the most prevalent type of schizophrenia. Hallucination (270, 73%) is the highest presenting symptoms in schizophrenia patients followed by delusion (225, 60.8%). Tab. Risperidone (106, 28.6%), second generation antipsychotics is the most prescribed monotherapy in schizophrenia patients followed by Tab. Olanzapine (80, 21.6%). I.M Fluphenazine decanoate and Tab. Olanzapine (26, 7%) is the most prescribed combination therapy.
Conclusion: The prevalence of Schizophrenia disorder in Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Uselu, Benin City is 33.3%. It was found to be most prevalent in youth. The most prescribed antipsychotics medication is second generation (Atypical antipsychotics).
