Abstract

This research examines the impact of TikTok and Instagram celebrities' lifestyles on students from the University of Benin and Benson Idahosa University in Nigeria, drawing on the Social Learning Theory and the Theory of Planned Behavior. Using a 16-item questionnaire and data analysis without specific numbers, the study uncovered that social media celebrities significantly influence the behavior and aspirations of Nigerian youths. As a result, the study recommends that social media celebrities adopt a more balanced and realistic portrayal of their lives, emphasizing their responsibility towards their young followers. Parents and educators should engage in open conversations with young people, equipping them with critical thinking skills to address the potential negative effects of social media celebrity culture. Furthermore, social media platforms should limit the visibility of unrealistic content and offer users tools for content management. Additionally, schools and organizations should promote activities beyond social media to provide alternative outlets for self-expression. This research highlights the importance of a more informed and responsible approach to social media engagement among young people, empowering them to navigate the digital landscape with greater awareness.
