ABSTRACT
This Project is aimed at unfolding the influence of Carnival Calabar on the Local Economy. The carnival which was instituted in 2004 is certainly one of the biggest cultural festivals in Nigeria today.
This event which has now assumed international dimension usually begins with the declaration of a one-month holiday for the civil servants in the state during the month of December. Thereafter, Local Government Areas are given days to show-case their unique cultures through foods, drinks, folklores, and dances. The climax of the month-long festival is the carnival procession which involves a colorful display and systematic parade through the major streets of Calabar with costumes, masks and masquerades. Notable African musicians are always invited to add colour to the occasion. The approach adopted in this study was the survey method which employed structured questionnaires, which were administered to 500 respondents and 477 retrieved. Responses elicited from respondents were analyzed using tables, charts and chi-square. The study reveals that Calabar carnival fiesta significantly influences the development of infrastructural facilities, standard of living of the people in terms of entrepreneurial development, revenue generation, employment generation and the sexual behaviour of the people in Calabar Metropolis. One of the recommendations is that, infrastructure should be improved upon to allow economic activities strive to their full capacity within Calabar metropolis. Carnival Calabar provides an opportunity for local communities to develop and share their culture. This creates a sense of value and a belief (by individuals) in the community; it also provides opportunities to exchange experiences and information.
