ABSTRACT

This study, titled "An Assessment of the Impact of Unemployment on Criminal Activities in Cross River State, Niger Delta Region of Nigeria: 2010 - 2015," explores the intricate relationship between unemployment and criminal activities in Cross River State over a six-year period. The research aims to provide an in-depth understanding of how unemployment contributes to the prevalence of crime, the specific types of crimes most affected by unemployment, and the effectiveness of government interventions aimed at curbing both unemployment and crime within this region. This study begins with a comprehensive review of the socio-economic landscape of Cross River State, highlighting its economic potential, demographic profile, and the socio-economic challenges that have historically plagued the Niger Delta region. It then delves into the trends and levels of unemployment in the state, providing statistical analysis and data-driven insights to paint a clear picture of the unemployment crisis during the study period. A significant focus of this study is on the types of crimes prevalent in Cross River State, categorizing them into violent crimes, property crimes, and cybercrimes, among others. Through qualitative and quantitative methods, including surveys, interviews, and secondary data analysis, the study examines crime trends and hotspots, identifying the areas most vulnerable to criminal activities. The core of this study investigates the direct and indirect impacts of unemployment on crime rates. By analyzing data from various sources, the study establishes a strong correlation between high unemployment rates and increased criminal activities, particularly among the youth population.
