ABSTRACT

The population of youths around the world is at its peak. The decisive demography having been restricted from the corridors of political powers in many countries has indubitably called for the attention of many to right the wrong. As a result, agitation in support of and promotion of youths' representation in the political atmosphere became a core priority of states across the Globe. In support of that course in Nigeria, a group of young people have successfully mobilized to demand constitutional rectification to relegate the marginalization of youths in the political space. Consequently, the public demand for youth inclusiveness gained legislative backing through the development of the Not Too Young To Run bill that was later enacted into law to reduce the age requirement needed to contest for public office in Nigeria. To that end, the research has its attention stationed on the problem of youth marginalization in Nigerian politics; discussion on the challenges associated with youths’ political participation which include political godfatherism, monetization of politics both in party primaries and general elections as well as proffering final solutions to them to improve the impact of the Not Too Young To Run Law in Nigeria. The study focuses on assessing the significant impact of the Not Too Young To Run Law on youth's political participation in Nigeria using the 2023 General Election as a case study to know whether the law has increased youth political participation and representation in the country. The outcome of the study shows that there was a significant increase in youths' political participation, and there was a slight increase in the percentage of youth aspirants and emergence into political offices through the 3023 general elections in Nigeria. The study recommended that the Too Old To Run law should be enacted into law, the independent candidature law should be enacted, godfatherism should be criminalized across Nigeria, the youths should engage in the power structure of political parties and contest for political offices, prices of party nomination forms should be regulated by law to make it affordable for the youths.
