ABSTRACT

This study aims to assess the impact of teenage pregnancy on the academic performance of female students in Oredo Local Government Area, Edo State. The research focuses on identifying the primary causes of teenage pregnancy, the prevalence of behaviors leading to such pregnancies among female secondary school students, and the resultant effects on their academic achievements. Additionally, it explores the socio-economic, cultural, and environmental factors that contribute to teenage pregnancy and proposes effective mechanisms to curb its incidence. The study employs a descriptive survey methodology, gathering data from a sample of 65 students, 5 principals, and 20 teachers across various secondary schools in the region. The objectives which were to examine the main causes of teenage pregnancy among females in Oredo Local Government Area, investigate the extent to which female secondary school students engage in behaviors that lead to teenage pregnancy, assess the significant impact of teenage pregnancy on the academic performance of female students, explore the socio-economic, cultural, and environmental factors contributing to teenage pregnancy and identify strategies for reducing the incidence of teenage pregnancy among female students. Preliminary findings indicate that teenage pregnancy in Oredo is influenced by a combination of factors, including lack of sexual education, socio-economic challenges, and cultural norms. The study reveals that teenage pregnancy significantly disrupts the academic progress of affected students, leading to lower academic performance, increased dropout rates, and diminished future opportunities. Moreover, it underscores the role of inadequate parental guidance and peer influence as critical factors. In conclusion, the research suggests that addressing teenage pregnancy requires a multi faceted approach, including comprehensive sexual education, community awareness programs, and enhanced support systems for at-risk students. By implementing these measures, it is possible to mitigate the adverse effects of teenage pregnancy on female students' academic trajectories in Oredo Local Government Area.
