AN ASSESSMENT OF THE IMPACT OF CORRUPTION ON SUSTAINABLE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT IN EDO STATE, NIGERIA

ABSTRACT

The continuous outcry of the citizens on the evils of corruption and its consequences on national development motivated this study. The major objective was to examine the impact of corruption on the sustainable economic development in Nigeria using Edo State as a case study. Even though there appears to be a general acceptance that corruption exists in every facet of human life, the study concentrated more on the public sector where primary data were extracted from civil servants in four Edo, State government Ministries and Parastatals through a well-structured questionnaire. Appreciable volume of information was also obtained from secondary sources. The study reviewed the history of corruption in Nigeria; looked at different corruption theories and concepts as well as examined the root causes of corruption. It also looked at the different ways it is manifesting itself in the country while also examining the efforts of successive governments in rackling the scourge. The study went further to assess the impact of corruption on sustainable economic development in Nigeria. The data gathered were subjected to econometric tool of ordinary chi-square to determine the relationship between the dependent and independent variables as well as whether the observed results differed from the expected results. The study revealed that corruption has eaten so deep into the fabrics of the Nigerian society with the result that none may sincerely be exempted from the practice. It also revealed that he scourge has damaged some fundamental cherished value systems and has made virtually made everyone to be struggling to have access to the nation’s commonwealth for selfish aggrandizement. Little wonder the international corruption rating agency has continuously rated Nigeria as one of the most corrupt countries in the world. On specific notes, the study revealed that corruption has a lot to do with the type of political structure in any given economy; the job position as well as the political office one occupies also influences the perpetration of corrupt practices by the individual. It is also opinion of the study that corruption is the major reason for the high incidence of infrastructural decay in Nigeria. The study therefore recommends that there is an urgent need for the nation work towards restoring the indigenous values and institutions, use religion as nation building platform since people appear to listen and display more confidence in their spiritual leaders, strengthen the existing anti-corruption institutions, establish special courts for adjudication on corruption cases as well as ensure that those found culpable are given the required disciplinary treatments to serve as deterrent to others.
