ABSTRACT

This study investigates the adorned traditional attire Adire, extensively utilised in Yoruba ceremonies within Oyo State, Nigeria. This study aims to thoroughly assess the importance of the use of Adire in Yoruba ceremonies by examining its historical significance, cultural symbolism, economic implications and cultural preservation. Through a mixed-methods approach, including qualitative interviews, observations and literature review, the study explores the historical revolution, techniques, motifs, and symbolism associated with Adire. It also addresses the contemporary issues surrounding Adire production and consumption, such as dwindling artisanal skills, globalisation, and cultural appropriation. The finding reveal the multifaceted role of Adire in identity 7 expression, cultural heritage preservation, and community cohesion, alongside the challenges threatening its continuity. Recommendations are provided for stakeholders to address these challenges and ensure the preservation and promotion of Adire as a vital cultural heritage and economic asset in Yoruba society.
