ABSTRACT
Adult literacy is a wide spectrum in education which broaden, enhance and activate the skills for the rural women. This study assessed the contribution of adult literacy programme on rural women in Ovia North East Local Government Area. A survey research designs and proportional sampling techniques were employed on one hundred and thirty (130) selected women in the study are. A structured questionnaire was used as the instrument. A descriptive analysis was employed for socio-demographic variables and research questions were raised to guide the study. The findings revealed that the involvement of rural women in adult literacy programme will help to promote their economic development. Adult literacy programme has helped to influence the women to participate in political activities. Through adult literacy programme, women are well enlightened on family planning and health related matters. The existing adult literacy will improve on women social and physiological aspect of learning to enable them function effectively. Based on the findings, it was recommended that more women should be encouraged to participate in adult literacy programme and the existing ones should be funded actively to improve the social, political and economic aspect of rural women to enable them function effectively.
