ABSTRACT

Climate change has become one of the most challenging global environmental issues facing humanity. Global warming is created by such societal activities as the combustion of fossil fuels and land use changes, but with wide ranging consequences to our natural world and to human settlements all around the world. While it is a profound global issue, in all of its manifestations and components, global warming is a deeply local issue as well. It is in this context, that urban centers of different sizes – especially cities – play a crucial role in the climate change arena. Therefore, this study focuses on the assessment of the challenges of climate change, with Warri metropolis, Delta state, Nigeria as a case study. Our objective are to examine the challenges of climate change on Warri residents with a view to making suggestions on strategies to mitigate the impact of climate change on the environment. Therefore to acquire an accurate data to achieve our objective a research methodology was carried out. The methodology used is the survey research design where questionnaire was administered to household heads in Warri metropolis. The sample size of the study comprised of hundred and fifty (150) respondents in Warri metropolis. Findings arrived at from the data analysis indicated that urban household, greenhouse gases, industries and infrastructures were the key sources of greenhouse emission that contributed to global warming effect in Warri. It is recommended that the above combination, within Warri, of increased vulnerabilities along with increased opportunities that can incubate important synergies between state government and private agencies and resources for creating innovative adaptation and mitigation strategies against the challenges of climate change.
