ABSTRACT
This study is an assessment of sustainable environmental practices in Nigeria. The Nigerian environment has experienced untold and unrelenting assault on the natural environment through poor and unsustainable environmental practices. The long history of poor and unsustainable environmental practices started way back from the pre-industrial era when woods were burnt to produce food, warmth and light. As necessary as it was back then, the first wrongful environmental practice that constituted threat to the natural environment before the discovery of oil and gas in Nigeria was bush bushing and tree felling. Therefore, there was a need for sustainable environmental practices that will enhance the continuous existence of humans whose sustainability is premised on the environment. This study examines what sustainable environmental practices in Nigeria entails, whether environmental sustainability is strictly complied with and enforced in Nigeria. This study also compares the laws on environmental sustainability of some select jurisdictions with that of Nigeria. This study observes that Nigeria do not cultivate good sustainable environmental practices. Therefore, this research recommends that the government should entrench good sustainable environmental practices into the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) Act which is the primary source of environmental law in Nigeria and concludes that the quest for sustainable environmental practices that would enhance effective management of the environment necessitates this study.
