ABSTRACT
This study examined an assessment of rehabilitation and transformation of inmates in Oko Prison, Benin City, Edo State. The objectives of this study were to examine the prevailing rehabilitation and transformation programmes available in Oko Prison, Benin City, Edo State; to determine the extent to which rehabilitation and transformation programme influence inmates behaviour in Oko Prison, Benin City, Edo State; to ascertain the extent to which corruption on the part of correctional officers reduce government efforts on the rehabilitation and transformation of inmates in Oko Prison, Benin City, Edo State; as well as to determine the extent to which political and party influence on the appointment of correctional officers pose obstacle to government efforts on the rehabilitation and transformation of inmates in Oko Prison, Benin City, Edo State; To achieve the objectives of the study, one hundred (100) questionnaires were administered by the researcher, of which ninety (90) were returned successfully and were used for the data analysis and presentation.
At the end of the analysis, the study revealed that there are rehabilitation and transformation programmes available in Oko Prison, Benin City, Edo State; that there is significant relationship between rehabilitation and transformation programme and inmates behaviour in Oko Prison, Benin City, Edo State; that corruption on the part of correctional officers reduce government efforts on the rehabilitation and transformation of inmates in Oko Prison, Benin City, Edo State and that political and party influence on the appointment of correctional officers pose obstacle to government efforts on the rehabilitation and transformation of inmates in Oko Prison, Benin City, Edo State.
In line with these findings, it is recommended that the prisons should be sufficiently funded by the Government to boost effective rehabilitation of inmates.
