ABSTRACT
This study was primarily focused on the effect of domestic violence on academic performance knowledge. Four research questions were raised to guide the researcher. The design of the study is descriptive survey while the population comprises of consist of teachers in secondary schools in Ovia North-East local government area, Edo State. These schools include Asoro Grammar School, Government Science Technical College, Iyoba Girls Secondary School, Kings and Queens College, Ohonre Grammer School Boys College and Federal Government Girls College. The sample size for this study was 120 respondents. The convenience sampling technique was used to select the sample for this study. Descriptive statistics was used to analyze the research question
The findings revealed that physical violence, sexual violence, psychological aggression, property destruction and stocking of family members are forms of domestic violence among students in junior secondary school. It was discovered that domestic violence influence students’ performance academically. Family background influence student behavior to a very great extent. Since family is the first agent of socialization, it a very important factor to how a child behaves in school.
Based on the findings, it was recommended that raising awareness levels nationwide will go a long way to stem the trend. Domestic violence should be criminalized to curb its excessive occurrence. As such child and mother protection laws should be enacted. More child protection services and agencies should be established in the country. These child protection agencies provide systematic help for abused mothers and children.
