ABSTRACT

The study assessed domestic violence on children's academic performance in Oredo Local Government Area, Edo State. The objective of the study are to identify the academic challenges faced by Children that have witnessed domestic violence in Oredo Local Government Area; to ascertain the causes of domestic violence that affect Children's academic performance in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State; to identify the effects of domestic violence on the academic performance of Children in Oredo Local Government Area and to identify the support mechanisms currently available to Children in Oredo Local Government Area exposed to domestic violence, which will help maintain or improve their academic performance.

The descriptive research design was adopted for this study. 300 copies of questionnaire were distributed to participants in in Oredo Local Government Area, Benin City, Edo State. Data collected were analyzed using frequency count, percentages, and mean with the aid of the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) 24.0.

The empirical result revealed that the respondents agreed that children exposure to domestic violence negatively affects their academic performance; domestic violence could hampered and diminished student interest in attending school; domestic violence against children negatively affects student’s punctuality and that domestic violence against negatively affects children reading habit. The study recommend that school principals should form strong guidance and counseling departments to help the students recover from the trauma of domestic violence  and that various relevant legislations of Government on domestic violence should be enforced to the letter to serve as deterrent to would-be offenders.
