AN ASSESSMENT OF DIGITAL TOOLS PRESENT AND USE IN PUBLIC PRIMARY SCHOOLS IN IKPOBA OKHA LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF EDO STATE

ABSTRACT

          This study was carried out to identify an assessment of Digital tools present and use in public primary schools in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of Edo state. The researcher made effort in analyzing Availability of Digital tools in public primary schools, Extent to which Digital Tools are been used in Public Primary Schools, and the influences of the Available Digital Tools on the Performance of Pupils in Public Primary Schools.

            The research was carried out as survey research using relevant literature from journals, magazines, books and the internet. Three research questions and two hypotheses were raised and analyzed for the purpose of the study. Seventy-seven (77) primary school teachers were selected from ten (10) primary schools in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of Edo state. The data were analyzed, interpreted, and discussed using percentages and mean deviation tables. The sampling technique used for the research is stratified random.

            The result revealed that; the presence of Digital tools in public primary schools in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of Edo state is quite low and inadequate, digital tools are not used by teachers in public primary schools in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of Edo state. And digital tools in primary schools help to increase attention, foster better understanding and enhance the teaching and learning process, there is a significant difference between the availability of digital tools between public and private primary schools, there is no significant difference between male and female teachers in their use of digital tools in primary schools. Based on the results, it was recommended that, in restructuring our education system, emphasis should be given to the application of digital tools in the education sector, although the level of the application of technologies in education is still low but significant progress has been made in the area of policy direction and involvement of private sector. The government should rigorously pursue her e-governance society as this will encourage more citizen to take advantage of technology knowledge, if the government is not forthcoming, the school management can solicit both internal and external funds and support from willing individuals, philanthropists, and international organizations. They can also embark on networking and partnership programmes for funds, technical support, etc but should ensure that funds or support realized are geared toward sustainability of digital tools and application efforts, it is also being recommended that Teachers should be motivated and necessary training on the use of digital tools should be carried out, also, necessary infrastructure should be provided to support the introduction of digital tools in schools.
