ABSTRACT

The study assessed covid-19 lock down in Benin City and social work implication. The objective of the study was to analyze the effect of the Covid-19 lock down on Nigerian citizens' socioeconomic activities; to know the effect of the Covid-19 lock down on academic activities in Benin City; analyze government intervention during lockdown periods in Nigeria and to examine the role of the social worker during Covid-19 lock down in Benin City.

The study adopted cross sectional research design. The population of the study consisted students in the department of social work in the University of Benin both full time and part time. Three hundred and ten (310) copies of questionnaire were distributed to respondents as sample size. Data collected were analyzed using frequency count, percentages and mean, with the aid of the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) 24.0.

The empirical result revealed that families found it difficult to afford daily meal, access to banking facilities were difficult and that the COVID-19 lock down affected businesses and public health. The study recommends that need for government should also implement some fiscal policy measures to mitigate the effects of the pandemic on the economy and that Measures such as poverty alleviation, employment generation, skill acquisition programmes, apprenticeship scheme and other forms of technical and vocational training should be use to reduce the negative outcome of the lockdown.
