This study delves into the persistent issue of poverty in Nigeria, particularly during the presidency of Olusegun Obasanjo in the fourth republic (1999-2007). Despite the country's abundant natural resources, poverty remained a formidable challenge. This research investigates the socio-economic factors contributing to this ongoing problem and explores the obstacles that hindered the effective implementation of poverty alleviation policies during this period. It also examines the impact of governance issues, such as corruption and mismanagement, on poverty alleviation initiatives. Additionally, the study contextualizes the historical legacy of colonial exploitation and uneven development within the government's poverty alleviation strategies during the Obasanjo era. The findings of this research have significant implications for both academia and policymaking, offering valuable insights into poverty reduction efforts in developing countries and guiding evidence-based policies for the future.
