ABSTRACT

This study investigated the problems of learning science education in Nigerian Universities using University of Benin as a case study. The study aimed at finding the problems of learning science education. Lack of students motivation, Students cognitive ability, Lecturer Characteristics, Learning environment, Instructional resources, Lack of parental support, Corruption and strike actions were identified as problems of learning science education in Nigerian Universities. To guide the study, three research questions were raised.

This study employed the descriptive research design. The population of this study comprises science education students in the Department of Curriculum and Instructional Technology. One hundred and twenty (120) students formed the sample size. The instrument used for this study was a questionnaire titled' Problems of learning science education in Nigerian Universities'. Data obtained from the instrument was analyzed using frequency counts and percentage.

Findings of the research showed that students lack motivation in learning science and as such they show little or no interest during science classes. The study also revealed that some students do not have high cognitive ability and they tend to see science courses as difficult. In addition, the study also revealed that lecturers do not use engaging lecture strategies and methods. Based on these findings and conclusions, it was recommended that Government and all stake holders in the education sector should make provision for adequate Infrastructural facilities also, science education lecturers should be sponsored for seminars, conferences, and training sessions to ensure they are up to date on the latest development in science education. It was also recommended that science students should be trained to work and adapt to new environments. They should also be trained to work in teams as this will foster a creative and innovative environment.
