ABSTRACT
The study appraised poultry feed marketing in Benin Metropolis, Edo State, Nigeria. The specific objectives were to describe the socio-economic characteristics of the poultry feed marketers, determine the factors affecting the retail selling prices of poultry feedsin the study area, estimate the marketing margin of the poultry feed marketers in the study area and identify the constraints faced by the poultry feed marketers in the study area. A multi-stage sampling technique involving both purposive and random sampling techniques were used to select 45 respondents for the study. Data were generated from the respondents using a well-structured questionnaire. Data obtained were analysed using simple descriptive statistics, regression analysis and marketing margin analysis. Results revealed that majority of the respondents (53%) were females and were between the age bracket of 30-39 years. Regarding educational level, 44% of them were educated up to secondary school level, indicating they had moderate level of education. The regression result showed that buying price, transportation cost, rent of shop, taxes, union dues and quantity of feed purchased were positively and significantly associated with the factors that affected the retail selling price of feed. The enterprise had a market margin of ₦20,450 implying that the selling price is close to or only slightly higher than the cost of purchasing it.Results further showed that the problem of transportation constituted the greatest constraints. It is therefore recommended that policy makers should address the issue of bad road network and draft policies which can tackle and effectively bring about the development of better access to roads which would reduce transportation cost and aid marketing.
