ABSTRACT
This work is a critical evaluation of the rules of succession and inheritance under customary laws in Nigeria. It relates the issues of constitutional and human right conflicts in customary law of succession to the modern legal discourse with a view to resolve the conflict inherent in both systems. Before the advent of colonial administration in Nigeria, there existed a people occupying vast areas of territories which were traditionally dominated by highly diverse ethnic groups with high sophisticated customary systems. The procedures of these various traditional institutions are well defined by customs and traditions, it is the various modes of succession that will be examined in this work.
