ABSTRACT
This study investigates the Problems Hindering the Effective Teaching of Biology among Senior Secondary School Students in Egor Local Government Area.The study made use of Census Sampling Technique to select (20) teachers from the (13) public Senior Secondary Schools in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State.Five research questions were raised to guide the study.
The instrument used for this study was the questionnaire. The questionnaire was designed and validated by experts in the department of Curriculum and Instructional Technology, Faculty of Education, University of Benin, Benin City. The instrument was administered to Biology teachers. The data from the responses was analyzed with the use of descriptive statistical techniques such as tables, frequencies counts, mean score and standard deviation.The result of the Analysis revealed that laboratory equipment, Biology specimens, laboratory assistants and technologists are not sufficient for Biology practical. It was also revealed that the teachers have a good sense of classroom organization, mastery of their subject matter and Biology teachers have another subject area of specialization. Also, teachers do most of the talking during class activities, demonstrate to the class issues related to real world situation and engage students in solving real world problems. It was also revealed that some of the specimens for Biology practicals are not available and equipment is not sufficient and accessible.
It was recommended that the Government and School Administrators should improve the service condition of teachers so as to promote the teaching profession. It is recommended that adequate laboratory equipment should be given to the schools by the Government so as to improve the practical teaching of Biology. Government should also organize workshops and seminars for teachers to enable them get updated knowledge on development in the teaching of Biology. It was also recommended that teachers should be assigned to teach only subjects their area of specialization.
