ABSTRACT
This project addresses the errors of the translated Edo Bible. The Edo language is located in Benin and spoken natively throughout the seven local government areas of Edo state of Nigeria. The objective of the study is to determine the errors of the translated Edo Bible. However the aims of the study are to examine through literature the types of errors and probable causes, to conduct an investigation and a descriptive analysis into errors committed by translators of Edo Bible, and lastly to eradicate probable causes and sources of the errors. The method of data collection is solely from the Edo Bible, with the help of a linguist who is a native speaker of the language in carrying out the task of translating the Bible, and bringing out the errors. The theoretical framework this study adopts is the interlanguage theory as regards the errors of the translation in the Bible, and specifies that the source of the errors is interlanguag due to the fact that the translators transferred the structural patterns of English into the Edo language. This framework uses inter-language theory inter alia with Gass and Selinker, (1994) model for error analysis to analyze and categorize the types of errors. The major finding of the work is that the bible society of Nigeria which carried out the translation of the Edo Bible did not perform a proper linguistic work on translation and on the correct orthography of the Edo language. The work recommends that tone making should have been employed in the translated Edo Bible to reduce ambiguity as most all the lexical items are ambiguous in the Edo Bible.
