ABSTRACT

The study aimed to evaluate The study of the Recreational lifestyle among adults and youths in the University of Benin.. A total of 100 respondents, consisting of 69 males and 31 females, from 5 different LGAs participated in the study. A questionnaire developed by the researcher was used to collect data, which was analysed using simple count, frequency percentage, mean, and standard deviation.

This study conducted an in-depth exploration of the complex socio-cultural factors impacting female sports participation in Edo State. Addressing Research Question 1, the investigation unveiled that deep-rooted gender norms often dissuade girls from sports involvement, exacerbated by media perpetuating stereotypes and cultural practices shaping perceptions of appropriateness. Research Question 2 highlighted gender-based disparities in sports access and opportunities, including sponsorship, resource allocation, and prioritization of male teams in schools and communities. The study's attention turned to family and community influence in Research Question 3, emphasizing the pivotal role of supportive family environments and the inspiring effect of successful female athletes and role models in driving participation. Finally, Research Question 4 delved into the impact of gender stereotypes, illustrating how traditional gender roles funnel girls into specific sports and subject female athletes to heightened scrutiny and pressure to conform. The lack of representation in leadership roles further entrenches gender biases. These findings underscore the necessity of dismantling stereotypes, fostering inclusivity, and amplifying the visibility of female athletes to foster a more equitable sports landscape in Edo State.

In conclusion the comprehensive analysis of socio-cultural factors influencing female sports participation in Edo State provides valuable insights into the complex dynamics at play. The research findings shed light on the deep-rooted gender norms, cultural practices, and stereotypes that contribute to the limited engagement of women in sports. The significance of family and community support emerged as a critical factor, where environments challenging traditional gender roles and promoting girls' participation proved instrumental in fostering athletic involvement.
