ABSTRACT

This research work appraises the rights of victims of human trafficking in the Nigeria legal system. This research further sheds light on some of the laws relative to human trafficking, and examines the application of the laws on the aforementioned offence. In addition, the research observes that there has been a problem of lack of coordination between international agencies and the Nigerian domestic agencies, i.e. NAPTIP and other law enforcement agencies that are meant to prohibit trafficking. The research also establishes the findings on the application of the relevant laws on the offence of trafficking and finally recommends that judicial and administrative mechanisms should be strengthened where necessary to enable victims to obtain prompt and adequate redress through formal and informal procedures that are expeditious, fair, inexpensive and accessible. The research concludes that the judiciary and administrative mechanisms for the prevention of human trafficking is ineffective, illiteracy a major challenge to combating human trafficking, in addition Nigerian anti-trafficking laws and all other laws relative to the offence did not provide stringent punishment that is commensurate with the gravity of the offences.
