ABSTRACT
This research examines the Syrian armed conflict and the international crimes that have been committed in the armed conflict. This research identifies the parties in the armed conflict and explains the meaning of armed conflict and other related terms. Furthermore, this research determines the classification of Syrian armed conflict. The research discusses the history of Syria, how the armed conflict in Syria started and the effects of the war. The research analyses the international laws applicable to the Syrian armed conflict and discusses the role of the International Community in Syrian armed conflict. The international community must come together to put an end to the armed conflict in Syria because of the grave breaches and human right abuses it has occasioned. It also discusses institutional framework for the prosecution of violations occurring in the Syrian armed conflict. The research recommends that all parties to the conflict should be reminded of their existing international obligations and that the situation in Syria should be referred to the ICC. The research concludes that regardless of whether or not the situation in Syria is referred to the ICC, domestic courts will have an important role to play in the fight against impunity for crimes committed throughout the course of the conflict.
