ABSTRACT
This Paper examines the impact of Nigerian oil and gas industry on the environment. The Nigerian oil and gas industry has had a profound impact on the environment, causing widespread ecological damage, environmental degradation and human suffering. The industry’s operations including but limited to oil and gas exploration, drilling and production have led to oil spills and gas flares, resulting in land pollution, air pollution and water pollution, deforestation, and habitat destruction. It adopt the doctrinal research method and makes reference to enacted laws, judicial precedence and executive policies put in place in regulating the oil and gas industries in Nigeria. Sadly, despite the laws put in place such as the Climate Change Act 2021 and the Petroleum Industry Act 2021, oil and gas industries continue to pollute and degrade the environment. The research further finds that oil and gas exploration, production, processing, and use, which have become essential resources for modern life, release large amounts of greenhouse gases, mainly methane which reduces the air quality and in turn cause hazard to the health of the environment and humanity. The study observes that oil spills and drilling operations have contaminated water bodies, affecting aquatic life and human consumption. The research recommends that Nigerian government should diversify energy sources to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and mitigate climate change impacts. There should be the adoption of sustainable practices, such as clean technology and renewable energy sources. The study concludes that by adopting clean technologies, renewable energy sources, and sustainable practices, the industry can reduce its environmental footprint.
