ABSTRACT

This project explores the analysis of the hydropower potential of the Ethiope River and the design of a small hydropower plant using River Ethiope as its source. Hydroelectric power is a sustainable and renewable energy source with significant potential for providing clean electricity. Using the Ethiope River as a case study, we investigate the technical, economic, and environmental aspects of harnessing its hydroelectric potential. A thorough review of existing literature was conducted to understand the best practices, challenges, and lessons learned from previous hydroelectricity integration projects. This study also encompasses a comprehensive analysis of the river’s flow, topography, and energy output, taking into account the installation of hydroelectric infrastructure. A simulation model was developed to test the feasibility of the project. Furthermore, environmental impact assessments are performed to ensure the project aligns with sustainable and ecological standards. With a head of 9.2m and a volumetric flow of 31.73 m3/s, the Integration of hydroelectricity from the Ethiope River into the national grid has the potential to contribute 2.43MW to the energy mix, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and enhance energy security in the country. This research aims to provide valuable insights and a blueprint for the sustainable development of small hydroelectric projects, contributing to the transition to address the nation’s growing need for clean and sustainable energy solutions and the achievement of national energy goals.
