ABSTRACT

This project explores the background to the new rules as well as their contents and possible differences compared to the older regimes. A lot has happened in shipping during the course of the 20th century which calls for a need to reform. There has been attempts for this reform. The first attempt was the visby protocol from the 60s. The research talks about the Hamburg rules which was the second attempt for some various reasons became a failure, and as such the Rotterdam rules were created as a result of the background. These new rules have been built on the old familiar conventions, also introducing changes both to the existing rules as well as covering new areas. This research concludes that things should be put in place to modernize, improve and ammonize the laws governing international carriage of goods by sea through the replacement of old and outdated conventions. This research work also gives out adequate recommendations. This is not just to educate, but to open the mind of readers to activities in the past and present attempts to reform the laws and create a standard rule for carriage of goods by sea in Nigeria.
